Pre-Match Analysis: Borussia Dortmund hosts Augsburg in a mid-table clash

After a disappointing home draw midweek to Lille in the UEFA Champions League, Niko Kovač and company will be looking for a return to winning ways in the Westfalenstadion. While the 6-0 decimation of Union Berlin two weeks ago was a spectacle to behold, it remains Niko Kovač’s only home win since taking the helm of Borussia Dortmund.

The underwhelming 1-1 draw with Lille aside, BVB has looked quite promising in their last two domestic games, first that 6-0 win over Union Berlin and then last Saturday’s 2-0 away win at St. Pauli. This was the first time this season that Dortmund managed back-to-back wins, and another three points would be massive in the race for Europe.

One thing still seems to remain at Dortmund regardless of manager, and that’s inconsistency. An atrocious loss to Bochum followed by an outstanding win against Union? What can we possibly expect? Keep reading for the latest team news, probable lineups, and match predictions:

Borussia Dortmund vs Augsburg preview: Hosts look to continue getting back on track

Die Schwarzgelben secured a 2-0 win on the road against St. Pauli last time out, placing them 10th with a seven-point gap to Eintracht Frankfurt in third.

Their last home match in the Bundesliga proved sensational, as BVB overcame Union Berlin 6-0. Niko Kovac’s side, however, played out a 1-1 draw in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg against Lille on Tuesday evening.

Kovac, though, has overseen a recent turnaround in form, with his men unbeaten in their last four matches.

Augsburg will provide a stern test for Dortmund, after the hosts have failed to win eight of their last 10 matches on home soil; a far cry from the incredible home record set in the campaigns first half.

Thankfully, the injury list for BVB is not too long.

The hosts will be without both Daniel Svensson until the back end of the season, and Felix Nmecha who is set to return later this month. Otherwise, Kovac has a full squad to select from.

The visitors held Champions League hopefuls Freiburg to a 0-0 draw last time out, with die Fuggerstädter unfortunate to not have taken all three points.

The visitors, however, have failed to score in four of their last five in all competitions, although keeping three clean sheets during this period is a huge plus point for Jess Thorup’s side.

Unbeaten in four, Augsburg have drawn three and won one in a run against sides making up part of the top eight.

Thorup will believe that his men can provide a tough test for a resurgent Dortmund side this weekend.

Augsburg are left with out Henri Koudossou, Robert Gummy and Mads Valentin Pedersen.

Kristijan Jakic and Yusuf Kabadayi are also unavailable, meaning that Arne Maier and Frank Onyeka will likely start in the middle together.

Pre-Match Analysis: Borussia Dortmund hosts Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of the Champions League playoffs

Borussia Dortmund surprised everyone by beating Sporting in Portugal by a three-goal margin for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League playoffs. Following a substandard first half in Lisbon, the Black-and-Yellows woke up for the second part and gained a valuable advantage in this week’s matchup at the Signal Iduna Park. However, it is too early to celebrate just yet.

Despite the reasonable advantage, Sporting Lisbon is not a team that you can entertain a closer aggregate difference. Sporting has some great-level players in their squad, which makes their mission a little more attainable. Also, once the Portuguese have nothing to lose coming to the Westfalenstadion, things could get complicated, especially if they break the deadlock early in the game and the momentum changes.

Is it a Sporting comeback still a miracle — or at least highly unlikely — yes. Although the odds are not in favor of Gyökeres & co., BVB cannot allow the Lions to get into the game by any means. Moreover, the Dortmund players will be under pressure due to the terrible performance against Bochum on the weekend, which gives them something to prove to the Yellow Wall. Here is the prematch analysis for Borussia Dortmund hosting Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of the Champions League playoffs:
