Pre-Match Analysis: Borussia Dortmund hosts Augsburg in a mid-table clash

After a disappointing home draw midweek to Lille in the UEFA Champions League, Niko Kovač and company will be looking for a return to winning ways in the Westfalenstadion. While the 6-0 decimation of Union Berlin two weeks ago was a spectacle to behold, it remains Niko Kovač’s only home win since taking the helm of Borussia Dortmund.

The underwhelming 1-1 draw with Lille aside, BVB has looked quite promising in their last two domestic games, first that 6-0 win over Union Berlin and then last Saturday’s 2-0 away win at St. Pauli. This was the first time this season that Dortmund managed back-to-back wins, and another three points would be massive in the race for Europe.

One thing still seems to remain at Dortmund regardless of manager, and that’s inconsistency. An atrocious loss to Bochum followed by an outstanding win against Union? What can we possibly expect? Keep reading for the latest team news, probable lineups, and match predictions:

The numbers associated with the league table should prove especially frightening for Kovac. With a win, Jess Thorup’s FCA could draw level with Dortmund on 35 points in 10th place. Such an outcome would prove disastrous for Dortmund’s already bleak European prospects.

Kovac spoke on the possibility of pairing Maximilian Beier together with Serhou Guirassy in a two-striker-set, deliberately ruling the option out. Beier will serve on the wing.

“If you have two strikers and there are only two in the box, you won’t get far,” Kovac said. “Ultimately, it’s about having enough people in the box, no matter from what area they enter.”

Both Guirassy (at nine) and Julian Brandt (at ten) will retain their positions from the UCL draw despite workload concerns. If deemed fit enough, Felix Nmecha will play in midfield.

“I’d like to play him [Guirassy] a little less,” Kovac noted. “But he’s the only true striker at his position which means he has to work through it.”

“It shouldn’t be too hard on him [Brandt],” Kovac noted of his other ironclad starter. “We need Jule. He is a very important part of this team. The only way to get him back to where he needs to be is to play him.“

“Of course he can also play in the number 10 role,” Kovac said of Nmecha. “But with his physicality, presence, technical skill, vision, and interpretation of the position, he is a future player for the number six or eight.  He is the future of this club.“

Borussia Dortmund signing a doubt for Lille clash

Borussia Dortmund’s winter signing Carney Chukwuemeka is a doubt for their UEFA Champions League game against Lille on Tuesday night, Niko Kovač confirmed in Monday’s press conference.

The Englishman had a “small incident” in their Bundesliga win against St. Pauli on Saturday afternoon. “He collided with someone and had slight problems with his thigh after the game,” said Kovač, before adding that BVB “will see how things develop overnight.”

One player that is available again is Julian Ryerson. The Norwegian defender was absent from the game at St. Pauli because of illness but is expected to make a return to Kovač’s starting line-up at the Signal Iduna Park tomorrow night.

“He will be ready to play tomorrow,” said Kovač.

Karim Adeyemi is also a man in demand from Kovac, who has relied on the German attacker in every game.
